How is Beard Hair Transplant Performed?

During the examination, the doctor draws the desired beard contours for the patient . Additionally, bald or thinning areas are identified according to their surface area in cm² [2]. This allows calculating the required number of the grafts. The FUE technique is used for harvesting and the required number of grafts is extracted[2].
When the procedure is planned, the outer 1.5-2 cm border of the beard contour must consist of single-hair grafts. The use of multi-hair grafts in these zones will lead to an unnatural appearance. Therefore, the single-hair grafts play a vital role in creating a natural outer beard contour[3].
The double-hair grafts can be used in the central areas [3]. However, the selective use of double-hair grafts is required. The scalp hair is finer and straighter than the beard hair. Therefore, it is hard to obtain the desired beard density using only single-hair grafts. In case of necessity, double-hair grafts can be used to achieve the adequate density.
When a patient has sufficiently thick hair and the required number of grafts is not high, all the harvested grafts can be transformed into single-hair grafts and a larger number of single grafts can be implanted per cm². However, this increases the labor intensity of one session. After the extraction, there is a need for the extra work of separating multi-hair grafts into single-hair grafts. Moreover, the denser implantation pattern should be used for obtaining the sufficient volume.
This procedure can be carried out when the hair shafts are thick. When the hair shafts are medium or fine, the use of double-hair grafts is necessary. The triple or quadruple grafts should not be used in the central areas. They may lead to the pitted appearance. Therefore, the micro-incisions should be applied in these areas without exceeding the two-hair grafts.
The Roles of FUE and DHI in Beard Transplantation
As beard hair restoration is performed on the most prominent part of the body, the face, it requires a meticulous approach. Even the smallest technical mistake can be seen and influence the final result negatively. Even a minor design mistake in one of the beard parts may become visible. Unlike the scalp hair, the beard hair grows at a much sharper angle. If the grafts are not implanted at this precise natural angle, the results will look unnatural, and the beard will become prickly to touch. The proper alignment will ensure that the new hair will blend properly with any already grown facial hair.

Who Can Have a Beard Hair Transplant?
